Property tax assessments need review

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT HAS come as no surprise to me that the question of property tax has again reared its ugly head hence your blaring headlines of Tuesday July 16. In other circumstances and in other places, the Hon. Arnold Bertram would be asked to step down. Not only is the matter like Babel, but there is a strong element of deceit which cannot be explained away by the tired word 'misunderstanding.'

Those of us who visited the Tax Office in rural Jamaica in order to find out what the new tax would be were appalled by the increase, but we were led to believe that by the time the notice of assessment reached us, there would be a change.

Alas, the figures remained the same. Everyone expected an increase in property tax, but how can you value lands which consist of only bush and stone - from a previous valuation of $45,000 to $420,000.

Why can't we get something right.

I am, etc.,

MABEL KNIGHT
