Netballers through to semis

MANCHESTER, England:

JAMAICA brushed aside Wales 72-32 yesterday to earn a place in the semi-finals of the netball competition at the XVII Commonwealth Games.

Goal shooter Elaine Davis put in 42 of 47 attempts and goal attack Simone Forbes 19 of 20 as Jamaica advanced to meet mighty New Zealand in tomorrow's showdown.

Meanwhile, the swimmers continued to find the going rough in the pool. Ramon James, Mariana Chuck and Angella Chuck all dropped out at the preliminary stages of their events.

James was third in heat three of the men's 50m butterfly but his final time, 26.70 seconds was off the 25.24 he needed to get into the semi-finals. Mariana Chuck was seventh in heat three of women's 100m backstroke in 1.09.65. The heat was won in a Games record 1:01.16 by Sarah Price of England.

Angella Chuck clocked 58.44 for seventh in heat three of women's 100m freestyle won in 56.64 by Australia's Petria Thomas. Jamaica will be looking to Olympic finalist Janelle Atkinson to lift the gloom in the pool when she competes in today's 800m freestyle heats.

Karen Anderson was beaten in the women's squash plate final by Canada's Margo Green. Green won 9-0, 9-5, 9-1. The plate final is played among first round losers of the main draw.

Meanwhile, Jamaica's three Badminton representatives went out in the opening rounds of the singles. Nigella Saunders was beaten 7-3, 8-6, 5-7, 7-4 by Nigeria's Kuburatu Mumuni. New Zealand's John Gordon whipped Bradley Graham 7-1, 6-7, 7-1, 7-1 and Scotland's Graham Simpson defeated Charles Pyne 7-8, 7-1, 7-5, 3-7, 7-4 in a hard-fought encounter.
