LESS THAN two weeks after the Government appointed 55-year-old Clive McCullock as the acting executive director of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC), he was found dead Thursday night, on the Port Royal Road in Kingston.
His body was found slumped in the driver's seat of his motor car, with a bullet wound to the right side of the head. He was clutching his licensed firearm in his right hand.
Beside him were four suicide notes. According to police sources who saw the notes, they gave instructions that he wished to be cremated and that there should be no eulogy or remembrance at his funeral service.
The notes also expressed apologies to his children and relatives for the action he had taken. He also reportedly said allegations made against him by a family member were lies.
His body was found shortly after 6:00 p.m. near the Norman Manley International Airport. Detectives from the Elletson Road CIB, who spoke with The Gleaner yesterday, said they were probing the matter to establish a motive.
"Based on our information, we are looking at financial or family problems he might have been experiencing," said one CIB personnel.
Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Omar Davies, in a brief release yesterday, said that he received the news with "great shock".
"My condolences go to his family and relatives in this unfortunate period of their lives," Dr. Davies said. He added that Mr. McCullock was known throughout the industry as a dedicated officer of integrity.
Administrative director of BGLC, Tanya Anderson-Rose, said the death of Mr. McCullock has cast "a pall of gloom over the Commission."
"We were very depressed when we heard the news this morning. We were shocked," said Mrs. Rose.
She described Mr. Mc-Cullock as a "soft spoken, patient person", who joined the BGLC in December 1999. Mrs. Rose was the last person from the office who saw him alive.
"We both attended a board meeting Wednesday evening. After the meeting, we went to our respective homes. The following day (Thursday) he left his home for a long period and could not be found. Later on in the evening we got news that his body was found in his car," said Mrs. Rose.
Mr. McCullock was acting as BGLC executive director, subsequent to former executive chairman, John Thompson, going off on leave and Howard Mollison being appointed chairman.
