THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS wonderful to read about the Constant Spring Police Station and the St. Andrews South Police Division in their effort to promote co-operation between the police and people to solve crime and other manner of social decay. I hope that the community will continue to give their support to the police initiatives.
The people must continue to establish co-operative relations between schools, the police and community organisations. Continue to send a clear message in the community that crime activity will not go unanswered. Call neighbourhood meetings for citizens concerned about criminal activities and involve the media.
Remember, especially young people in gangs or those who are hanging out are not primarily a law enforcement issue, but a community issue. Criminal activity often occurs when young people do not have access to socially acceptable alternatives. Children who are poorly prepared for school and receive little support for their positive efforts may turn to criminal gangs for a chance to "be somebody."
Schools must recognise the potential and value of each child. Academic support and positive extra-curricular opportunities are essential for at-risk youth.
Some young people need help with interpersonal and decision-making skills. Young people can be taught to visualise the consequences of their actions, and to understand that they can choose what to make of their lives.
A crude and brutal war zone tactics will not abate the violent crime rate in Jamaica. Continue on this path and don't pre-empt the court and therefore undermine the due process of law. I sincerely hope that the community will continue to use the media towards heightening the awareness of wrongdoings whether it's from the police or any other member of society. Minister Phillips, I wish you well, and may God continue to give you the vision and strength.
I am etc.,
