UWI appoints water resources professor


Karanjac

THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) has appointed Dr. Jasminko Karanjac to the position of Professor and Chair in Water Resource Management in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Mona.

Born in Kastel Stari, Croatia, Professor Karanjac holds the Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering from the University of Belgrade Yugoslavia. He subsequently received the Master of Science in Engineering, the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Civil and Geological Engineering from Princeton University, USA (1971).

Professor Karanjac was Senior Researcher at the International Centre for Environment and Nuclear Sciences, UWI between April 2000 and November 2000, lecturing on environmental and water resources management and creating ground water information systems for river basins in Jamaica. Prior to that, he worked as a freelance consultant hydrogeologist and a computer specialist internationally. He has also developed ground water information systems software and practised mathematical modelling in countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean for international organisations such as the United Nations, the UNDP, IFAD, GTZ.

Professor Karanjac has been consultant to various government, private and public water supply companies in ground water data processing, data management, resource modelling, water resources master planning and resource evaluation. He has a strong academic record, teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His first academic assignment was Assistant Professor at Indiana University, USA as early as in 1970. He has also taught short courses in modelling and groundwater data processing in the USA, Europe, New Zealand, South Africa, China, Latin America and the Middle East.
