Constant Spring Market may close

THE CONSTANT Spring Market, St. Andrew, has been without piped water for more than a month now.

Vendors and other users of the market have been complaining about the inconvenience caused by the lack of water there.

The market is operated by the Kingston and St. Andrew Cor-poration.

Town Clerk, Errol Greene, was unavailable for comment yesterday, but a source at the KSAC said that extensive use by residents from nearby communities and the non-payment of stall rental fees by vendors were among the reasons for the lack of water.

"The revenue coming in is $2,000 to $3,000 per week. That type of revenue can't cover it. The water isn't serving only the purpose of the market. The adjoining communities are also responsible for the excessive use," explained the source, who asked not to be identified.

He said that the KSAC was looking to close the market as it is being looked on as a future transport centre, because it is not "economically viable" in its current state. The KSAC trucks two big drums of water there daily for sanitary purposes.
