Women football gets big bucks

SHERWIN WILLIAMS yesterday announced its sponsorship of the Jamaica Football Federation Women's League to the tune of $500,000 for the rest of the season.

Eleven teams divided into two zones are taking part in this year's competition which is being sponsored for the first time. Zone A comprises Untouchable Strikers, Duhaney Park, Harbour View, Blacks United and Brown's Town. Zone B includes defending champions Portmore Strikers, Waterhouse, Barbican, Maverley/Hughenden and Olympic Gardens.

Under the sponsorship arrangement, the first-place team will collect $150,000, second $90,000, while third and fourth will get $50,000 and $35,000 respectively.

Ian Forbes, managing director of Sherwin Williams (WI) Limited, said his company's sponsorship for another year would be based on the discipline of the players and the organisation of the event.

He went on to say that women's football needed all the support it could get in order for players to secure professional contracts overseas and possibly get scholarships to colleges.

"We decided to come on board early and not to jump on any bandwagon because the programme really need support at this time. We saw it as a needs of tying it with our Super Kem Flat Emulsion, which in any instance is being bought mainly by women.
