THE 4TH annual Lethe Coconut Festival will be held this weekend (August 10-11) at the coconut farm at Ellis Piece in Lethe, St. James.
Established on the banks of the Great River in the Spinal Forest region of Jamaica, the farm, operated by Mercon Limited, produces tropical blooms for the local and export market under the shade of the coconut palms.
The diary of event commences at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday with a Floral Demonstration. This will be followed in the afternoon by a Vermiculture presentation by Franklyn Brown, which will feature demonstration by Rural Agricultural Development Agency (RADA). The Spinal Forest Project will feature presentation by Marlene Lewis and Mervin Jarman from the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica.
The Spinal Forest is a continuous forest that will extend along the central mountain ridge of Jamaica from the Dolphin Head Mountains through the Cockpit Country, Dry Harbour and Blue Mountains to the John Crow Mountains.
The festival, packaged as a family affair, will feature merry go round, play station and a tree house over the Great River for the children. Other attractions include, Coconut Craft competition, managed by the gifted craft artist Shanki, Coconut guessing and husking, Poetry & Prose reading by Montego Bay Little Theatre Movement actors, Douglas Prout and Jane Crichton, and Hopeton Gray.
