Salute to our junior athletes

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to say a big thank you to our junior athletes for their magnificent performance during the recently concluded World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica.

As a Jamaican residing abroad, I felt on top of the world, just listening and reading about their achievements.

Not to single out any one athlete, but after Usain's 200m run, a "bolt of lightning flashed through New York City." To Aneisha and Simone, you missed your individual gold, but together with your team-mates, you ran like warriors for that relay gold. To the girls 4x4, I admired your fortitude in fighting for that 4th place finish.

A big thank you to the coaches also, you stand among the best. And to the hundreds of volunteers, thank you. The medal bearers looked so "criss" in their gold outfit.

To the Minister of Sports and Tourism, I would like to see the Tourist Board using highlights of the WJC to sell Jamaica. The picture of the Croatian high jumper, with her native flag and the Jamaican flag tied around her waist, says a thousand words. Use our young athletes in some of the advertisements (Butch Stewart, hope you see this.)

Congratulations again, and I look forward to seeing you all in 2003 at the Penn Relays.

I am, etc.,
