THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WATCHED a very interesting documentary on television on Independence Day which was an old documentary of our first Independence. The programme was produced by the JIS and showed all the events surrounding the marking of that great achievement.
After watching the presentation, I wondered if my recollection of the events was flawed or if what has been written and said by others was incorrect. This was because Norman Manley, who is supposed to be one of our founding fathers, was only mentioned once and that was when he was introduced to Princess Margaret at the airport! Throughout the whole presentation, he was ignored totally.
I would have thought that his work leading up to Independence and even the fact that he was roundly chastised for building the National Stadium would have merited him being given some kind of accolade when the Stadium figured so prominently on that night. Obviously not!
I guess that shows us that in those days you were not considered as deserving any mention if you were merely the Leader of the Opposition!
I think that documentary needs to be corrected to show a true reflection of the history of that time!
I am, etc.,
