Santokie and Marshall
HOSTS JAMAICA crushed Guyana by an innings and 89 runs to end their preliminary round fixture in the West Indies Under-19 cricket championships on a high at Kensington Park yesterday.
Jamaica finished with maximum 36 points from three matches, 18 ahead of second place Windward Islands (18), Guyana (15) and Canada (zero). They will now face Zone B runners up Trinidad and Tobago in one semi-final at Kensington Park tomorrow while Zone B winners Barbados take on Windward Islands at Melbourne Oval.
Final scores in the three-day match, Jamaica 361 for eight declared; Guyana 175 and 99.
Guyana resuming yesterday's third and final day on 130 for six failed to cope with left-arm fast bowler Krishmar Santokie (2-33) overnight. He was virtually unplayable on the final day to end with 5-42 from 28 overs.
Santokie, bowling a superb line and length, first removed overnight batsman Delbert Hicks (37), leg before at 159 for seven. The 17-year-old pacer, a member of the West Indies Under-15 2000 World Cup winning team, moved into overdrive to sent skipper Sauld Drepaul (14) and Deron Peters (one) on their way at 169 for nine.
Off-spinner Wayne Simpson, who took the last wicket ended with (3-33) Pacer Jerome Taylor (2-44) backed up Santokie very well to send the Guyanese packing before lunch.
Without hesitation captain Shawn Findlay asked the Guyanese to follow-on and with the pitch offering more bounce and pace for the fast bowlers, Sherman Gordon (3-21) and Taylor (2-25) struck four quick blows.
Gordon picked up the wicket of Latchmin Rohit (zero) in his first over, before Taylor struck twice in the very next over to remove Moshin Perkhan and Roopnarine Ramgobin without scoring. Things did not get better as Gordon in his second over bowled Zaheer Saffie for no score at one for four wickets.
However, vice captain Assad Fudadin (15) and Zaheer Mohammed (39) took charge for a while, the two featuring in a 61-run fifth wicket stand.
At that stage, Guyana looked as if they were going to hold on for at least a draw but part-time spinner Xavier Marshall had other ideas. The Jamaica first innings century maker removed top scorer Zaheer Mohammed (39, 4x4), Delbert Hicks (14), Peters (17) and Quacy Malty (17) to end with 4-10 off 7.3 overs.
