A NEW website, dedicated to providing local technology-related information and resources, was recently launched.
TechJamaica.com (www.techjamaica.com) is an online resource of local technology information, news, events, discussion forums and other features catering specifically to Jamaican tech enthusiasts.
TechJamaica.com is the brainchild of Christopher Gilbert, an Information Systems Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, who conceptualised, designed and developed the website after he recognised the need for an online resource offering access to local technology information and bringing some cohesion to the numerous players in the industry. According to Gilbert: "I often come across Jamaican individuals with particular technological skill-sets who are totally unaware of the existence of other Jamaicans with that same skill-set. In fact, some persons I meet who are considered as 'techies', are blissfully unaware of what's really happening in the local tech industry. This is why a website like TechJamaica.com will become invaluable as it will not only offer information on local tech news, but will also afford these like-minded individuals the opportunity to share and discuss tech-related issues".
It is no secret that there are numerous foreign websites dedicated to technology, but what gives TechJamaica.com its uniqueness is that the site caters primarily to Jamaicans. Mr. Gilbert believes that with the wealth of experience possessed by the various contributors and participants, the site will offer quality information and support to its visitors and, because it is Jamaican based, will take the local environment and culture into consideration.
The hub of activity at TechJamaica.com will be in the tech discussion forums where guests and members will have access to postings on several discussion boards under various categories (hardware, software, general, etc.). Guests may choose to register and become a member at no charge, and have the opportunity to enhance their tech discussion forum experience.
Persons who may not consider themselves "techies" need not worry, as the site caters to a wide range of visitors. At one extreme are those visitors who are not technologically-inclined but may have a simple tech-related question or problem that they'd like addressed. At the other are the technologically-inclined visitors, the proverbial "die-hard techies" who are quite proficient in their particular field. Suffice it to say, anything tech-related and Jamaican will have a place on TechJamaica.com.
Individuals or organisations with technology-related information relevant to the Jamaican market, may submit material for inclusion on the TechJamaica.com website, via email to: webmaster@techjamaica.com.
