THE EDITOR, Sir:
JAMAICA IS celebrating its 40th year of independence, a tremendous milestone. Our little country has come a far way and I am so proud to be Jamaican. Congratulations, Jamaica on your birthday.
Eric Donaldson's song "We are no more little youth", which was sung 18 years ago is indeed true. We are big and mature. Our leaders, athletes, cricketers, netballers, singers, footballers, our spellers - and I could go on and on - have certainly made us proud and have definitely proven that we are no more little youth - we have grown up!
However, there is still an aspect that we still need to demonstrate maturely in, and that's when it comes to peace and love.
Beautiful words are engraved in our National Anthem. What a prayer! Should we not reflect on these words sometimes and allow peace to reign? Should we not as a nation pray more often for eternal Father to bless our land and guide us with His mighty hand?
Both our National Anthem and our National Pledge are prayers to our great God and creator. Our forefather intended for this island to be a peaceful and loving, God-fearing one. But somehow, things have not been too godly and we need to have a godly nation.
Why not play our part, under God to increase in godliness? I'm sure if we increase in godliness Jamaica will automatically increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity and will play her part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race.
I am, etc.,
