WARDERS AT the St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre found 60 sticks of dynamite during a search of the prison yesterday. At the same time one of their colleagues was found with 55 sticks of ganja.
The Correctional Services Department said that the dynamite was found during a routine search of the institution at about 12.30 p.m. They were buried 12 inches into the ground near the South Block area, which is close to White Church Street.
A number of additional items were also found during the search. They include three cellular telephones, 30 feet of half-inch thick rope with three steel hooks found buried in a hole on the premises, a cellular phone charger and battery and a ratchet knife. The items were handed over to the police.
The warder, who was arrested with the sticks of ganja, was identified as Paul Davis, 38, of a Deanery Road, East Kingston address.
He is the second warder to be arrested in recent months for selling ganja inside a correctional institution. A warder was arrested on June 26 at the new Horizon Remand Centre and charged with being in possession of and dealing in ganja. He was one of some 600 warders who had just resumed work after more than two years on interdiction.
But, vice-president of the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU), which represents the warders, Lambert Brown, said yesterday that while the union condemned the involvement of any warder in corrupt actions, they should be applauded for their role in the confiscation of the contraband.
