WALDERSTON, Manchester:
A LARGE turnout of flag-waving, orange-clad supporters of the People's National Party (PNP) converged on the compound of the Christiana High School on Sunday, August 18, to attend the annual conference of the North East Manchester, constituency.
In his address, Minister of Water and Housing Donald Buchanan spoke of the government's achievements, including Operation Pride. The Minister, who is also chairman of Region 5 which includes Manchester, read excerpts of the report by the Commission of Enquiry, which dealt with the West Kingston riots as they related to lawlessness.
Mr. Buchanan also spoke of Mr. Seaga's criticisms of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) members and of the work of Operation Pride.
"He attacked a young, black Jamaican whose company -- Black Construction -- had done quality work," he said, while the composed-looking owner Kenneth 'Skeng Don' Black sat on the platform.
Black had arrived earlier, with a large entourage to a tumultuous welcome.
Minister of Security, Peter Phillips, who was the guest speaker said the coming election will be one of the most serious. He reiterated plans to repair all police stations, and improve training and welfare of the personnel.
Caretaker of the constituency, Dorothy Miller, a 50-year-old operator of High Tech Chemicals; a former employee of Crown Life Insurance; teacher and a mother of four was confirmed as the party's candidate to oppose Mr. Audley Shaw of the JLP.
Among those participating were Minister of Health, John Junor, Michael Peart, candidates and councillors from the region.
