SAJ invests in education

REAFFIRMING ITS commitment to education, the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) last Thursday renewed over 30 high-school scholarships and added seven new beneficiaries to its scholarship assistance programme. The programme seeks to assist employees with financing their children's education at the secondary and tertiary levels.

The new beneficiaries are Sean Belafonte, Shanique Burke, Sheldon Branch, Renee Dujoy, Richard Hylton, Janelle Ross and Rozay Williams. These students have gained spaces in high school after successfully sitting the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT).

During a ceremony at the Newport West headquarters of the SAJ in Kingston, scholarships valued for five years and are renewed annually, were presented to students, accompanied by their parents and guardians. Scholarships are renewed if students meet specified criteria as it relates to maintaining a good average and good attendance, among others. Administrative Officer of the SAJ, Georgia Donaldson, while handing out cheques, commended the new recipients on gaining a place at high school and stressed the need for students already in the programme to consistently perform at a high standard.

"It is important that you meet the specified criteria to continue to benefit under our scholarship assistance programme," she said, noting also that good performance in school will also equate to a secure future.

She also encouraged parents and guardians to continue to support and monitor their children. Scholarships are continued if students successfully complete each year at school and are promoted to a higher grade or form. Students are also required to maintain good academic average.
