COME NEXT week, the Joint Industrial Council for Port Bustamante, will celebrate its 50th anniversary and a week of activities is being planned to commemorate this occasion.
Established on August 26, 1952, the JIC consists of management and trade unions representatives who meet monthly to discuss issues relating to working conditions on the Port of Kingston in order to arrive at mutually beneficial solutions conducive to the development of the industry. The activities being planned for the anniversary week, include representatives of the Council paying courtesy calls on the Governor-General His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Howard Cooke, and Ministers of Government, as well as leaders of relevant labour/union organisations.
There will be a special JIC meeting on August 28, involving a panel discussion on the "Future of the Shipping Industry" to be addressed by President and Chief Executive Officer of the Port Authority of Jamaica, Hon. Noel Hylton and "Future of Union/Management Relations" to be presented by trade unionist, Lloyd Goodleigh. A special concert for workers is also scheduled to take place on August 30.
The work of the JIC has been integral to the success of the Port of Kingston over the years.
