THE EDITOR, Sir:
DURING THE week August 12-16, 2002, I happened to be on study leave due to exams the same week. I decided to do some reading but wanted to be somewhere more conducive besides home so, the Tom Redcam Library was my choice.
While being there for four days, it was quite refreshing to see the number of children who visited the library each day. Between the hours of 9 and 10 a.m., they were being dropped off, some came by buses, while others strolled from within the distance. The reading room downstairs was crowded with children reading various types of books. Upstairs, I saw them returning and replacing books they took previously.
This is indeed a wonderful sight as I remember the days when the Jamaica Library Service mobile unit visited our community on a weekly basis. We would take books one week, read them and then return them the following week to take new ones. I am not certain this is still happening but at least the children are visiting the library.
Keep it up parents, this will no doubt help in the proper preparation of our children for the years ahead. After all, the children are indeed our future.
I am etc.,
