Come clean

The Editor, Sir:

I BELIEVE it is time Mr. Seaga, and the Jamaica Labour Party come clean with the nation on a few issues.

The first issue they must deal with, which I think is the most important, is the matter of free education up to the secondary level; just how much is it really going to cost? While I believe that a government should do all in its power to educate its people, I also believe that a country with limited resources, and unlimited problems, needs to be prudent with what little it has.

On August 21, 2002, the G2K through its spokesman declared that the provision of free education would cost the nation less than J$1billion, J$650 million to be exact. This figure they claimed was arrived at after extensive research. Today RJR's website quoted Mr. Seaga as saying that though the programme will cost more than $1billion the JLP will not increase taxes.

Well Mr. Seaga, which is it, $1billion or $650 million, and how is it going to be financed? I know the idea of an "education bond" has been mooted, but really, how are you going to raise $1billion in time for the start of the 2003 school term?

I am etc.,
