Honouring achievement

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I would like to take this opportunity to extend heartiest congratulations to the two students from Campion College and the Head Boy of Kingston College on their glorious achievements.

It is my belief that excellence in the academic field should be given as much, if not more prominence, as achievements in the sports arena and the music arena. In fact scholastic endeavour is well known to support and buttress sports and music activities. Involvement in sports can assist in improving one's ability to study and vice versa.

As a nation we need to pay more attention in recognising high academic performance of our young people so that they can be role models for their peers. This achievement surely gives the lie to the oft repeated expression that our education system is the worst it has ever been. The achievements of these three youngsters prove once again that all is not lost and we still can have hope for our future.

Once again I wish to give heartiest congratulations to the three high performers and to say all Jamaica is proud of their achievements. Keep up the good work and with God's help you will continue to succeed.

I am etc,

MEARLE D.P. BARRETT Ph.D.
