THE EDITOR, Sir:
THERE IS an article on Page A6 of the Gleaner, dated, August 23, 2002, the headline of which states "EAC rejects UPP as political party". While the body of the article is substantially correct, the headline is totally incorrect.
I wish to categorically state that the Electoral Advisory Committee (EAC) has not rejected the United Peoples Party as a political party. The EAC does not have the power to accept or reject any political party in Jamaica.
The Representation of the Peoples Act confers upon the EAC the power to grant political parties the right of participation in the voter registration process. In processing the application of the United Peoples Party (UPP) for such right, the EAC has found that three of the four requirements have been met and has enjoined the UPP to take the appropriate steps to comply with the fourth requirement.
Please note that the EAC has invited the UPP to participate in the Election Centre and will be training any or all of its indoor agents that the UPP will desire us to train for the upcoming General Election.
I am, etc.,
Prof. ERROL MILLER C.D.
Chairman,
Electoral Advisory Committee
