Cops foil jailbreak at Central lock-up

WHAT COULD have been a massive jailbreak at the Central Police Station lock-up in downtown Kingston was thwarted yesterday morning when police discovered large sections of grill bars had been cut and rejoined with pieces of a soap bar.

The discovery was made during a routine check of a cell in which the police said they found two cellular phones, several knives and razor blades.

Reports are that this was an area located in the north east section of the cell block where the police have been pleading with the government to repair for some time now.

"The area we are talking about has about 14 prisoners who have easy access to the grill bars that were cut. The hole was big enough for anybody to go through," said Superintendent Carlton Wilson, Commanding Officer for the Kingston Central Division.

The officer said the prisoners roam the area freely because the doors of their cell area are defective. The locking system does not work. This was one of the problems Police Commissioner Francis Forbes attempted to solve when he took office.

There have been several jailbreaks at the Central Police Station over the past few years and some inmates who escaped five years ago are still on the run.
