Air J's handling of children

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM extremely upset with the way Air Jamaica handles their unaccompanied passengers (small children).

I am extremely upset about the situation that my seven-year-old son was put in. On Wednesday, Air Jamaica called to inform my relatives in Jamaica that flight 11 to JFK would be delayed until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. At no time did Air Jamaica call me the mother of the child to inform me of the delay.

The flight was scheduled to leave at 5:10 p.m. Thursday. The delayed flight did not leave until 9:18 p.m. arriving at JFK at 1:45 Friday morning. The fact is that my child was at the airport at 3 p.m. Thursday, and did not board the flight until 8:45 p.m.

I arrived at JFK airport at 2:30 a.m. and my child still did not clear customs until 3:00 a.m. I had to be at work for 8:00 a.m., meaning that I did not get any sleep at all. This is the second time this has happened, the first time was July 10, 2002. This time Air Jamaica went too far and I am outraged at the treatment and the extremely long delay. Air Jamaica needs to do better!

I am, etc.,
