Sugar company moves against illegal dumping

THE MANAGEMENT of Frome has instituted its own security patrols in order to apprehend and prevent those responsible from continuing illegal dumping on its cane fields.

The activity is both illegal and dangerous as it not only prevents access to these fields for the carrying out of the company's agricultural and harvesting activities, but also creates health and environmental hazards for surrounding communities.

On Saturday, August 17, a truck operator was caught illegally dumping garbage on an interval in the cane field on the Acton farm, operated by the Frome Estate. The operator was taken to the police, charged and appeared before the Westmore-land Resident Magistrate's court.

The intervals in cane fields cultivated by The Sugar Company of Jamaica Limited, particularly at Frome and Bernard Lodge estates, are being used by truck operators as illegal dumps for debris and garbage removed from surrounding areas.
