JAMAICA AND West Indies all-rounder, Laurie Williams, and his brother, Kevin Jenninson, were killed in a car accident yesterday evening after the car they were travelling in lost control and collided with a JUTC bus on the Causeway between Kingston and Portmore.
The 33-year-old Jamaican cricket star, recently involved in the Red Stripe Bowl, had picked up his brother, a 23-year-old teacher, from Jenninson's home address in St. Ann and the two were returning to Williams' home in Bridgeport when the crash occurred at around 5.30 p.m.
According to police reports, Williams swerved to avoid a pothole on the Causeway and lost control of his silver Honda Torneo. The vehicle swerved across the dual-carriageway and into the path of an oncoming number 17 JUTC bus bound for Kingston. According to police reports, no one in the bus was seriously injured.
The crash caused massive tailbacks on the Causeway in both directions and a huge crowd had gathered at the scene of the accident, when The Gleaner arrived, as a fire crew attempted to remove the bodies of the deceased.
Laurie Williams was born in St. Ann on December 12, 1968 and made his first class debut against England at Sabina Park in 1991. His one-day international debut followed in Port-of-Spain against New Zealand in 1996 and he went on to play 15 times in the one-day West Indies side. His best performance for the one-day side came in his second appearance against New Zealand in Guyana when he took three wickets for sixteen runs.
