THE EDITOR, Sir:
I would like to use this medium to express the plight of the residents of Walderston district in Manchester.
More than nine years ago the once beautiful water supply ceased completely and the taps ran dry.
Since then no member of the National Water Commission or the political representatives of North-East Manchester have attempted to explain this situation publicly to the residents. I am beginning to think that if "Water is Life", then Walderston is lifeless, and will remain so if the problem is not urgently addressed.
I consider this unfortunate situation to be a great disregard for the residents of Walderston, who are also taxpayers. To compound the problem, residents have to go far and wide to fetch water or buy water at exorbitant prices, especially during the dry season. Water is also stored in catchment areas, e.g. drums and tanks, but often becomes unhygienic due to insect (especially mosquitoes) infestation. This poses a further health risk.
Walderston is a farming and animal rearing community. I am kindly asking the representatives from the National Water Commission and the political representatives, especially our Member of Parliament, Mr. Audley Shaw, to come forward and address this problem. The residents of Walderston are eagerly awaiting life. Thank you.
I am, etc.,
A CONCERNED CITIZEN
