THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM approaching 50 years old and except for the typical rantings of Mutty Perkins, I have never read a more galling article from someone who seeks to garner the attention of fair-minded readers, than one which appeared in your paper of September 1, 2002.
I am obviously referring to Dawn Ritch, whom I usually dismiss as a hopelessly converted right wing doctrinaire seeking revenge. In this article, Dawn's attempt to convince your readers that the JLP is a paragon of virtue, is so pathetic, it makes me sick. It confirms my suspicion that Dawn was never interested in "fair commentary'.
To outline the mistakes of the PNP without referencing a single bad decision by the JLP during their tenure, is the final straw in my book. It may have been clear to other Jamaicans before, but it is now clear to me, that Dawn wants a JLP government, no matter what.
The PNP, having occupied the seat of power for the last 13 years, must expect its policies to be scrutinised and challenged in as vibrant a democracy as Jamaica. The Jamaica people have a choice to make, they will do so based upon their individual perceptions of what is to come. I must reinforce that the quality of leadership necessary to steer the country forward after our fortieth year of independence is patently missing from the current crop of party leaders.
But Dawn Ritch's article adds nothing to the substantial debate that is needed to assist the electorate in making a choice in this upcoming election. It helps those who have already made up their minds to vote JLP, but fails to convince anyone that the PNP is worse than the JLP.
I am, etc.,
