A PNP rally funded by the State

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM shocked and appalled at the vulgar, outlandish and blatant political bias displayed by the People's National Party at the opening of Phase 1 of the North Coast Highway on Friday, September 6.

Hordes of cars, buses and trucks, filled with supporters dressed in PNP campaign T-shirts and orange caps, and waving orange flags travelled in a motorcade behind the Prime Minister and other party officials. I even saw a Urban Development Corporation SUV parked at the Reading intersection, with the occupants waving to the passing PNP campaign vehicles, with clenched fists, the PNP sign.

This was supposed to be "a national event" to mark the long overdue completion of the highway. I was going to attend but seeing the display of the forerunning political motorcade, I decided not to attend, as a protest, and, therefore, boycotted the event. The 'opening,' late as it was, deteriorated into nothing more than a PNP rally, funded by the state.

We must not allow any political party to use state funding for the staging of election campaigning. It is wrong, and we the people, must take the strongest action against any government that wastes our hard-earned tax dollars in such a manner.

I am etc.,

WINSTON DEAR
