THE EDITOR, Sir:
IF JAMAICA is to grow, it is vital that our professionals, both public and private, act more professionally.
Too often, we are quick to blame the politicians for everything, without realising that most of us who conduct business, never meet a politician. However, we are more likely to be in touch with the lawyers, architects, doctors, dentists and the technocrats in many of the public offices.
From experience, some of these persons rarely respond to phone messages. When I discuss the matter with friends and associates, they too have similar tales. It appears that these unprofessional professionals have adopted a "third world" mentality, with no intention to change.
The people in the legal profession would be among the "first line" of approach for people interested in investing in any meaningful business venture in the country, a "turn-off," therefore, at this stage, is a sure "repellent".
In most career training, ethics, though limited in most instances, constitute part of the curriculum. Prompt response to phone calls and messages signifies good manners and politeness - qualities so necessary for improved human relationship and business.
The sooner most of our professionals become more conscious of their state of unprofessionalism, then, the change towards growth of our country will be enhanced.
