JLP questions water pipe removal

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

PEOPLE'S NATIONAL Party Youth Organisa-tion (PNPYO) president, Basil Waite has become embroiled in a St. Elizabeth Parish Council issue concerning the removal of National Water Commission (NWC) pipes from a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) represented Council division.

JLP Councillor for Lacovia, Broderick Wright, has asked the Council to investigate a situation in which Mr. Waite removed water pipes, that were given to his division, from the compound of the Maggotty Police Station.

Mr. Wright told yesterday's Council meeting that Mr. Waite removed the pipes without prior consultations with either him or the National Water Commission (NWC).

When contacted by The Gleaner, Mr. Waite said that the project in the district of Maggotty Pass was in need of more pipes to be completed. He said that the pipes that were being laid are galvanised pipes and the second set of pipes which were given to the project were PVC pipes.

Mr. Waite, an employee of the NWC, said that he gave instructions that the second set of pipes be removed to a different location in the community to be used on different water extension projects in the Lacovia Division.

He said that plans were in place to order another set of galvanised pipes to continue the work on the Maggotty Pass project. Councillor for the South-field Division, Shirley Myers, said that he is concerned about the delay in the provision of two-inch water pipes promised to his division by the Ministry of Water & Housing.

He was speaking at the monthly meeting of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council at the Council's meeting room in Black River yesterday.

"I want to know why the pipes for the Southfield Division are taking so long, I need the pipes now" Councillor Myers stressed.

The two-inch pipes distribution programme was designed to assist all 15 Councillors in the parish in expanding the water supply systems in their divisions. Traditionally, South St. Eliza-beth is known for its extended drought periods, especially during the summer.

Councillor Myers also urged the agency to support him in getting word as to when the pipes would be delivered to the Southfield Division, for him to start the expansion of the water supply systems in the area.
