Wanderers' Taylor set to join squad

JAMAICA'S UNDER-20 World Cup squad is expected to get added reinforcement this evening with the arrival of Bolton Wanderers midfielder/forward Cleveland Taylor.

Taylor, who turned 19 on Monday, will follow the France-based Keith Kelly who was due in the island last night. Both players are expected to join up with the teammates for a tough two-leg fixture against their Haitian counterparts beginning this Sunday at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium.

The Bolton youth player, who is currently on a one-year loan to British Third Division club Exeter City was snapped up a few years ago from Derby County.

According to coach Wendell Downswell, the player came into contact with technical director designate Carl Brown, who is currently on a one-year attachment to Bolton Wanderers, and expressed and interest in representing the country of his father's birth.

There could be one hitch though to Taylor's availability which is his acquisition of a Jamaican passport in time for Sunday's game. "I am not certain that he will be able to play," said Downswell yesterday.

"There is an issue which we need to sort out and hopefully we can do that as quickly as possible. I think the process has been started so there is a strong possibility that he could get the passport and play on Sunday," an optimistic Downswell continued.

Whether Taylor takes the field Sunday afternoon or not, Downswell was pleased with the interest he expressed. "If we can get them at that tender age I think it would be much better for them to grow into the system.

"They start at Under-20s then Under-23s and then hopefully they make the transition to the senior team where they will serve us well," he said.

While the impending arrival of Taylor is a plus, there is a minor setback with the knee injury of midfielder Lenworth Hyde Jr. Hyde injured his knee over a week ago and it has not healed sufficiently enough to allow him to take the field.

"To some extent it has affected us but with Kelly coming in it should be a boost," Downswell said of Hyde's injury.

"The other midfielders have shown good form such as Sean Fraser, Ryan Maxwell and Akeim Priestley and others as well so there should be adequate replacements if needed," he continued.

Overall, Downswell said he was satisfied with the preparation of his squad with the players "demonstrating the requisite hunger, enthusiasm and commitment".

The players will need to show that same attitude against the Haitians who have their own France-based professional in striker Marc Herald Gracien to look to. Gracien has teamed up well with his strike partner Brunel Fucien in their games so far.

They arrive today and among their numbers should be: Ronel Saint-Louis, Yves Lapaix, Kenol Versailles, Wadson Corriolan, Stephane Guillaume, Brunel Fucien, Ricardo Pierre-Louis, Maxo Sampeur Jr, James St Cyr, Pascal Milien, Marc Herald Gracien, Delsa Jean-Judain, Guillliano Phillippe, Widly Simeon and Jean-Ernst Dios.
