Blessings flowed at 'Gospel Extravaganza'

Leighton Williams, Staff Reporter

WINSTON SILL, Freelance Photographer- Goddy Goddy on-stage at the 'Gospel Extravaganza'. He had the crowd on their feet all night at the Holy Cross Church Hall.

SEVERAL DIFFERENT modes of worship were used to glorify God at the Children and Communities for Changes' (3Cs') Gospel Extravaganza on Saturday night.

The normal singing was added to dancing, drumming and deejaying and eventually the audience left the Holy Cross Church Hall, Half-Way Tree Road, St. Andrew, truly blessed.

The Mandela Performers, a group of drummers, drew cheers and laughter with their performance. Their ten-minute stint saw the teenaged boys drumming up various negro spirituals. They also took turns in singing local praise and worship choruses. So thrilled was the audience that the group was asked back for a second stint. However, the patrons' requests were not granted.

In the dance segment, the Destiny Dancers started off their set well, earning cheers as they were showed off dance moves. However, their act was cut short by a recurring problem of a skipping track.

The singing segment saw national gospel finalists Sandy Smith, Adrian Smith and Shane Wright performing. Sandy Smith's rendition of her entry in this year's national gospel finals and Adrian Smith's performance were well accepted by the crowd. The later sang his entry and one other song before showing his versatility by deejaying.

Shane Wright had the audience in awe with his singing. He was called for an encore when he was through, however, he too was affected by technical problems as the backing track he was using skipped continuously.

Teenaged group The Aces had the audience in worship mode as they did several a capella pieces. The group opened their set with Do You Love The Lord?, which had the crowd cheering encouragement. They performed one other song which obviously the crowd also enjoyed.

Appelle also thrilled. They opened their set with King Jesus Is A Listening which was done a capella. Although they experienced technical problems due to a faulty microphone, the group was undaunted as they ministered with some amount of fervour.

The night was completed by gospel deejays Mr Gallimore and Goddy Goddy.

Mr. Gallimore, who was the penultimate act for the night, opened his set with a up-tempo tune. The youngsters were in spiritual ecstasy as they danced and sang along with the deejay.

With the help of a female singer, Cellicia, he had the crowd on a spiritual high. He got the audience involved as he did Rebuke That Spirit, which had the small crowd shouting back eagerly at him as he reeled off his lyrics. The deejay pranced about happily as the crowd danced and eagerly swallowed God's message.

The deejay closed his set with the popular What's Going On, which drew the same response as the prior songs.

Goddy Goddy was the perfect closing act. The majority of his lyrics were along the comical line.

The deejay opened his set with More Prayer, which had the crowd dancing. He then flowed into Yuh Caan Catch Me Again, which had even more patrons dancing and worshipping. The deejay, in between delivering his lyrics, 'logged on' and displayed the latest dance moves, much to the delight of the audience.

Pausing, he greeted the crowd and introduced a song called Sin in which he chastised politicians for their mismanagement of the economy. The deejay continued with the latest dance moves and one other song before ending.

The other performers for the night included Carlene Davis, Jason and Harmony.
