THE 'AU NATUREL' look is a fashion statement for some, for others it's a statement of who they are and what they stand for. Two such persons are Trudy Greenland and Tsobee 'Princess' Dunn.
"It's all about us staying natural. After all, we are all born with this natural hair. To me being natural is a part of being black," says 25-year-old Trudy, who has been grooming her locks since 1994.
Because they felt this way about natural hair, gravitating to the natural hair care industry was 'only natural' for them.
The most effective advertising tool for them has been their own hair, which they groom themselves. It has drawn many clients who had no idea that natural hair could be combed in so many hair-raising ways.
The two childhood friends both wear dreadlocks. Trudy says the 'natural' look is something her whole family was socialised to appreciate. Her mother, one of her brothers and one sister wear locks and all of her siblings sport natural hair. She is the appointed family hairdresser. Tsobee says two of her siblings also sport a dreadlock hairstyle.
The duo, after realising that they had a knack for caring and styling natural hair, started out as mobile hairdressers
travelling the length and breadth of Jamaica braiding, twisting, plaiting, and locking hair.
After trying to set up shop at various locations, they finally decided in June 2002, to open business at the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road and business is positively booming now.
Their reputation for providing excellent service precedes them and many known personalities go there for the services of these natural hair care specialists.
As Trudy is listing the names of her celebrity clients, in walks DJ Prince D'Andre to have his hair twisted. Their clientele includes Abijah, Buju Banton, TOK, Warrior King, Yogi, Len Hammond and the Marleys to name a few.
The Jus Natural Hair Studio specialises in locking, lock maintenance, plaiting, twisting, cornrowing, interlocking, palm rolling and treating natural hair. They also offer natural manicures and pedicures, and if you don't know what that means, it just means absolutely no chemicals are used, i.e. no acrylics ladies.
Jus Natural welcomes walk-in clients, but those who prefer to make an appointment can just call 946 9689 or 364 9170. Visit them today, satisfaction is
