Region 3 to supervise removal of flags from Corporate Area

BURKE

REGION THREE of the People's National Party (PNP) says it will be supervising the removal of all orange party flags from across the Corporate Area this week.

The Region, which groups the PNP's Corporate Area constituencies, says it intends to comply with recent rulings and guidelines of the Political Ombudsman, Bishop Herro Blair.

Last week, the Political Ombudsman issued a ruling that flags would not be banned as they play an important role in the country's politics, but said they should only be used in motorcades, at political rallies, in private yards, on private property, private vehicles, or at any other such place considered to be the lawful property of the party or its supporters.

"The ruling of the Ombudsman has been willingly accepted by the Region's leadership and there will be full compliance," the Region said in a release over the weekend.

The Region added that it will be organising special removal crews to visit specific communities and areas to ensure that all flags are removed by the middle of this week, the release said.

Concerns have been raised in recent weeks about the number of party flags placed on various public buildings and utility poles across the island. In party political strongholds, displaying flags help to show the strength of the party in the particular area.
