Health Department to address water concerns

ST. THOMAS:

FOLLOWING EXTENSIVE discussion at the Parish Council level and fears expressed by residents, concerns about the quality of the water here is getting some attention. Repeated calls by Councillor Constantine Bogle of the Yallahs Division has forced the matter to be kept on the agenda of the Council.

Secretary/manager of the St. Thomas Parish Council, Clinton Gordon, has released a correspondence received from the Health Department, which said:

"The water being purified for drinking is not sediment free as it is not filtered. In certain conditions the sediments precipitates." It also said there was not the likelihood of any harmful effects to human health and that chemical analysis would be pursued with a further view to reassure the public.

This comes against the background of mounting concerns being expressed by residents about the quality of the drinking water.

Councillor Bogle, who had been leading a campaign for clarity and public assurance, said he was a little less perturbed, but was still concerned about the foreign matters floating in containers when a catchment was made.
