ST. ANN:
THE ST. ANN'S Bay Transportation Centre remains underutilised says Mayor of St. Ann's Bay, Charles Tait.
"We have developed, built, equipped and staffed the transportation centre in St. Ann's Bay, and to date we have not had usage of the facility that one would expect," he stated.
He was speaking at the regular monthly meeting of the St. Ann's Parish Council, in St. Ann's Bay last Thursday.
Mayor Tait said that discussions were taking place between the Parish Council and the police, to see how they could improve the situation. He stated that the transport operators only used the facility when the police were targeting offenders, "but as soon as the pressure is off, those transport operators return to their old ways, which only cause congestion in the town".
The St. Ann's Bay Transportation Centre was built by the Parish Council at a cost of about $5.5 million, and was opened three years ago.
The Mayor appealed to motorists in the town to properly utilise the transport centre and also urged the police to become more vigilant with respect to transport operators who refuse to use the facility. "One understand quite clearly in Jamaica that persons do not enforce themselves, and the arm of law enforcement ought to function, because there are rules that say how they should function, and I would like the police, more than anything else to assist us at this time," he emphasised.
