PERSISTENT RAIN caused by a tropical storm forced the postponement of sporting events islandwide yesterday.
Also affected by the rain was the funeral service of former Jamaica and West Indies player Laurie Williams and his brother Kevin Jenninson, which was originally scheduled for Sabina Park and then Holy Trinity Cathedral.
The funeral will now be held today at the cathedral, starting at 2:00 p.m.
Some of the main sporting events that were affected by the weather were: the third round of the Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL), Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning and daCosta schoolboy football competitions, the mid-week 10-race programme at Caymanas Park and today's second best-of-three John Issa/SuperClubs St. Ann/St. Mary Hotels cricket final.
The NPL matches will now be played next Wednesday with Bull Bay vs Wadadah at Harbour View Mini Stadium, Hazard United vs Reno at Ferdie Neita Sports Complex, Constant Spring vs Harbour View at Constant Spring, Waterhouse vs Rivoli United at Emmett Park and Seba United vs Village United at Jarrett Park.
Meanwhile, the 10-race programme at Caymanas has been rescheduled for tomorrow, yesterday's daCosta Cup matches will now be played on Monday, September 23 (Zone A, Zone D and Zone E), while Zone C matches will be played on Monday, September 30.
Zone E matches originally scheduled for next Tuesday will now be rescheduled for the following day, while Zone I, J and K matches will be played on Monday September 23.
The Manning Cup matches that were scheduled for September 17 have been rescheduled for Thursday, October 3.
Also on the rescheduled list is the second best-of-three John Issa/SuperClus, Super-Inclusive Resorts sponsored St. Ann/St. Mary Hotels cricket final between defending champions Royal Decameron and last year's beaten finalist Jamaica Grande.
The new date is now set for Monday and, if required, Thursday of next week, Jamaica Grande won the first match by 11 runs.
