NWA blamed for Spanish Town flooding

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

THE GOVERNMENT and the National Works Agency (NWA) have been blamed for the flooding of this old capital on Wednesday.

The residents of the area complained that the NWA had started to clean several drains but did not complete them, and this caused the flooding of some houses. Up to late Wednesday evening, residents of Job's Lane were mopping up after the flood waters subsided.

In Old Harbour, several communities were flooded after more than 10 hours of rain. The Bog Walk Gorge was also impassable for several hours and the police had their hands full turning back motorists who were trying to force their way across the Flat Bridge.

Staff at the Spanish Town Hospital had to cope with water from the main road, which flooded the new maternity ward and the operating theatre.

Pauline Reid, the hospital's chief executive officer, said flood waters from the main road invaded the wards causing damage to several items.

When The Gleaner visited the hospital water was knee-high in some places, with several workers trying to find dry ground.
