Sumo looks a safe bet

Simpson.. to ride SUMO. - File

THIS WEEK'S Racing Pools game offers a $55,806 carryover from last Saturday, ensuring a first prize of $250,000.

The programme gets underway with a $150,000 - $130,000 claiming race over 1500 metres in which seven starters have been declared.

EYEOFTHETIGER, who is down to run in lesser company in today's fourth race, could well start favourite providing he wins today. The 3-y-o bay gelding can hold his own at this level and while I fancy his chances, especially if he wins today, LADY KAMPOOR and TEMPRESS are two dangerous opponents over this trip.

EYEOFTHETIGER was a fast-finishing third, beaten two lengths by NUCLEAR POWER over 1300 metres on September 7 and if half the horse he was in April/May of this year, should come out on top from his convenient mark.

Next on the programme is a 3-y-o maiden race over 1600 metres which looks made to order for the steadily improving SUMO to be ridden by leading jockey Trevor Simpson.

Trained by Dwight Chen, the chestnut gelding by Royal Minister out of Terminator gave every indication that he had come to hand when running on strongly into second place to ARIZONA STAR over 1500 metres on September 7. With the exception of SWEET DOREEN, none of his opponents seem as forward as at present and he should get off the mark at SWEET DORREN's expense.

Incidentally, SWEET DOREEN nosed out SUMO for fourth place when finishing seven lengths adrift of ROYAL FIESTA over a mile on August 21, but SUMO seemingly has more score for improvement.

By virtue of her good third to OAKRIDGE over the round five course last Saturday, SPEED MACHINE holds the key to the third race for native bred two-year-olds over 1200 metres. Prior to that on August 21, he beat all barring SHAHID in the Knutsford Park Cup over tomorrow's trip and should upstage old rival GLOBAL AFFAIR and ROCK 'N' ROLL.

The crack sprinter OWEN TAYLOR, who was just touched off by NEFTENGA in the Digicel Cup over 1300 metres on August 31, is tipped to go one better in the fourth race for top class horses.

Being the largest horse physically in local racing, OWEN TAYLOR will find the big weight (59.0kg) no obstacle. But if he puts a foot wrong, could again play into the hands of RESTLESS WARRIOR who beat him by a length into second place over 1100 metres on July 20. Record chasing Trevor Simpson was the rider of RESTLESS WARRIOR then and now.

QUEEN OF BEL-AIR, who has beaten better in the not too distant past, looks the one to be on in the fifth race over her pet distance of 1820 metres (circular nine). She showed when third to BELLY DANCER on August 24 that she is regaining form and should lead home the recent winner CHATTANOOGA STAR and appealing outsider THE WHITE WITCH.

The last three races should be won by JADE RUNNER (working really well), LOOK AT ME (ready) and the speedy COURT CASE, who has not only changed stables since last raced on June 15, but has been extensively prepared as well.
