'Thanks for the support'

THE EDITOR, SIR:

MY family and I would like to publicly thank all those persons who have steadfastly believed in my honesty and integrity. Over the past four years they have provided support through kind words and deeds, love and prayers.

We would like to specially mention the Campion community (the board, staff, students, parents and alumni), friends and relatives near and far, the Jamaica Observer and CVM-TV for reasonably accurate and unbiased reporting; at least four popular talk show hosts who had nothing to gain by believing in me; and persons from all walks of life whom we don't know but who sent messages of encouragement.

To clarify any misunderstanding: In 1998, the school's auditors, Ernst and Young, made a report to me, I investigated the matter, found something amiss and in turn made a report to the Ministry of Education, at the same time requesting a detailed audit from them.

They, in turn, called in the police and together, they enthusiastically set about catching an alleged "BIG FISH". Neither the Ernst and Young report nor explanations of supporting documents was used to find out the truth.

After 50 appearances in court, and over three years later, we were considerably relieved when the judge returned a verdict based on truth rather than on spite and prejudice; and also that further charges which had no basis in fact were dropped.

It is a sorry commentary on our society, that when we play by the rules we are likely to get shafted. That, notwithstanding, we must always strive for what is right and what is good, and these should always prevail. Thank you and may God bless you.

I am etc,

JOHN MacKAY

Retired Headmaster of Campion College
