Liguanea post office to be completed by March next year

CONSTRUCTION of the new post office at Liguanea in St. Andrew should be completed by March of next year, according to Minister of Industry, Commerce and Technology, Phillip Paulwell.

A JIS release quoted him as saying that this project formed part of a wider programme to reconstruct 15 buildings islandwide, "to modernise our post offices across the length and breadth of Jamaica".

Ground was broken for the construction of the new complex about five weeks ago.

During a tour of the site last week, the Minister told journalists that the contractor, KES Development Company Limited, "has indicated that the project is going faster than scheduled", and that the March deadline was attainable.

He said that the project was a joint venture between KES Development and the Government, and the cost of construction was $200 million. The new structure would be a two-storey building, and there could be underground parking as this was being considered.

The Minister indicated that amenities for customers with impairments would be put in place.

"We are very concerned that our staff members are properly accommodated, but very importantly, our clients, especially the elderly and those who are disabled. We will have accommodations for them that will make their experience at the post office enjoyable," Mr. Paulwell said.

The Minister noted that of the 40,000 square feet under construction, the post office would be allocated 8,000 square feet, adding that all of the remaining space has been allocated to the private sector.

"This means that people have confidence in what we are doing, and very importantly for us, we will make a profit from this venture," Mr. Paulwell explained.
