Manning Cup: JC thrash Penwood 7-1

A FOUR-TIMER from Glegarte Williams led Jamaica College to a crushing 7-1 win over Penwood in their Zone B Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup schoolboy football match t Old Hope Road yesterday.

Williams got his goals in the 20th, 30th, 57th and 75th minutes while Joseph Shaw third and 15th and former national Under-17 player Vivian Malcolm, 59th, were the other goalscorers for JC. Penwood got their lone goal in the 90th minute.

The win pushed JC into second on six points from two games, behind newcomers and early leaders Innswood (nine), who defeated Clan Carthy 1-0. They are followed last year's beaten finalists Spanish Town and Donald Quarrie who have three points each.

St. Catherine recorded their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over hosts Campion. In another Zone C game, Denham Town (four points) edged Camperdown (three) 1-0 at Vauxhall playfield.

Over in Zone A, Ascot (six) came from two goals down to carve out an impressive 3-2 victory over early leaders Calabar (four). Omar Henry, 42nd and 76th minutes, and Delroy Brown, 94th, scored for the winners while Ackeen Themstead and Yannick Bell got the goals for Calabar.

Meanwhile, four other games were rained out. Defending champions Bridge-port against Meadowbrook at Ferdie Neita Park, Excelsior vs Holy Trinity at Courtney Walsh Oval, Wolmer's vs Ardenne at Wolmer's and Donald Quarrie vs Spanish Town at Bull Pen were not played because of water-logged fields.

    Frome Technical upset Rusea's

Paul A. Reid, Senior Staff Reporter

    WESTERN BUREAU:

A SECOND-HALF goal from Alphanso Lewis spurred Frome Technical to a 1-0 upset win over former champions Rusea's Comprehensive at the Colin Miller Memorial Sports Complex in Lucea yesterday in a rain-affected round of matches.

A number of games were called off due to rain and muddy fields and, in one instance, heavy fog. The key Zone E game between long-time rivals Munro and STETHS scheduled to be played in Malvern was called off due to heavy rains and thick fog.

In Lucea, Rusea's goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett misjudged a long kick from midfield allowing the ball to bounce off his hands and into the goal.

The win increased Frome's tally to two wins from as many starts but they still trail Rusea's by a point in the standings as the home team is on seven and in the lead in Zone B.

The struggles of defending champions Cornwall College continued after they were held to a 2-2 draw by William Knibb at Jarrett Park in a Zone A game that was played mostly in a persistent drizzle.

The Dr. Dean Weatherly-coached team which was upset 1-0 by Muschett last Saturday, was forced to rely on the scoring abilities of its two senior players, Kirkland Smith and Dane Richards, the same duo who scored in the team's win over Herbert Morrison two weeks ago to get a share of the points.

Smith gave them the lead after seven minutes when his free-kick crept under the hands of the badly positioned Claydon Innis in the William Knibb goal.

William Knibb hit back through their deadly duo of Delroy Elliss and Recardo Geddes and took the lead through goals in the 15th and 27th minutes - both from headers.

William Knibb held the lead until the 72nd minute when Richards popped up at the far post to guide home a cross for his team to earn a share of the points.

The draw was costly for both teams however as they each lost a player to a red card, Cornwall's central defender Andrew Walker and Geddes were caught fighting in the second half by referee Alden Jackson and expelled.

In Zone C, Knockalva Technical scored their first daCosta Cup win when they knocked off newcomers Lewisville 5-2 at the New Town Community Centre in Black River. Garfield Gordon and Andre Simms scored two goals each for the Dwayne Humphrey-coached team which led 3-1 at halftime.

Cedric Titus stopped Marcus Garvey Technical's two-match win streak with a 1-0 win in their Zone D match-up in Clarks Town, Trelawny.

The win gave Cedric Titus joint lead in the zone after Brown's Town beat Ocho Rios 1-0 and Aabuthnott Gallimore and Ferncourt played to a 1-1 draw.

    YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

    Zone A: Cornwall College 2 William Knibb 2, Muschett 0 Anchovy 0.
