Election promises and debt

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The plethora of promises being showered on the electorate like confetti at a wedding reception intrigues me.

But are some of the promises, or whatever, intended to be of academic interest only, considering our massive repayable national debt of over $490 billion?

I must confess, however, that several attractive baskets of goodies (especially those associated with taxation and education) have been unveiled that could cause many potential voters to 'salivate' with great expectations.

Nevertheless, it behoves the proponents of these promises, to temper political zeal with reality, common sense and sound economic/fiscal principles, to avoid any embarrassment should their organisation be called upon to govern.

I am, etc.,
