TVJ and the trivialising of serious issues

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I LISTENED with consternation on Monday September 2 as two presenters on TVJ's Smile Jamaica Programme made some embarrassing uninformed comments about the BITU's suggestion that Government abolish the GCT.

I imagine that the BITU has a political agenda and perhaps expects a response from the government similar to the one re free education. However, if media houses are going to comment on serious issues, they should ensure that the commentators have at least minimal understanding of how a country is run and a national budget financed.

The silliness of the comments made this morning - suggesting that because we collect taxes from GCT and income tax it should mean that the national debt should simply be paid off - is unbelievable. I would normally ignore this type of nonsense, but at this time when we are seeking constructive public discourse on economic and social issues, media houses should take steps to avoid having the uninformed and ignorant taking up precious time on the air.

TVJ, please show your viewers some respect.

I am, etc.,

JOAN WRIGHT
