JAMAICA'S CONSERVATION tourism industry received a boost this week with the announcement that London-based tour operator Caribtours will be featuring a Runaway Bay wildlife sanctuary in its 2003 brochure.
Seven Oaks Sanctuary for Wildlife (SOS-Wildlife) will be star in the luxury holiday dealer's 2003 Caribbean Escapes brochure, to encourage tourists to visit the sanctuary, according to Caribtours Managing Director Catherine Leech.
Besides the publicity, SOS-Wildlife has also received a US$1,000 grant from Caribtours and UK-based Friends of Conservation to support the care of four rescued Jamaican parrots for one year. A colour brochure will also result from the grant to publicise the role of the sanctuary in wildlife conservation and environmental education.
Friends of Conservation's Director Jonathan Hodrien wrote: "I am delighted to confirm that following consideration of all of the projects submitted to Caribtours, our panel of judges have recommended an award of US$1,000 to assist in your work," Friends of Conservation Director Jonathan Hodrien told SOS-Wildlife and went on to praise Caribtours for its generosity in making funds available "to preserve the natural beauty and wildlife of the Caribbean".
The sanctuary cares for various rescued wild animals and any species confiscated under Jamaica's Wildlife Protection Act with parrots making up the bulk of the sanctuary's population.
