Our "Pledge of Allegiance"

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I FIND it most inconsistent that a country whose "National Anthem" and "National Pledge", both begin with the acknowledgement of God, have omitted such acknowledgement from the proposed "Pledge of Allegiance" taken by those assuming public office.

In my opinion, a change from swearing allegiance to "Her Majesty" is both necessary and overdue. However, to swear allegiance to "The People and the Constitution of Jamaica" while excluding allegiance to our Creator is unacceptable. Surely, His standards, being higher than our own, would demand the highest levels of integrity from our leaders. Fr. Hugh Sherlock and others who contributed to our noble heritage, recognised the importance of putting God first.

Our present leaders must be bold enough to make a stand for what they believe. Or is this the real problem in Jamaica, "leaders who have no genuine Christian commitments?""

It is not too late, Mr. Prime Minister, let us as a nation, and our leaders in particular, pledge wholehearted allegiance to "Almighty God, The People and the Constitution of Jamaica".

I am, etc.,
