THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE MOST recent farce was the signing of the Political Code of Conduct 2002 by the leaders of the two major political parties.
The crowning to all of this, was the written concept, with the leaders' passport-size photos on either side, which appeared at the extreme bottom, in the front page of The Gleaner.
I cannot fathom what sense it makes if the supporters of the parties will not uphold the accord.
It used to be fun to be at a political meeting and the electors could move from meeting to meeting of the different parties in the community where they were being held without any confrontation.
It is too sad, that because of power, the true meaning of politics is misconstrued and politicians fail to apply the proper principle in pursuing the best ends by the best means.
Mr. Editor, I would like to know:
If a candidate refuses to sign the accord, what will be the consequence?
How effective will be the Political Ombudsman ruling on political complaints?
It is time we become politically disciplined and avoid being warlike to our fellowmen, which ultimately results in the loss of lives and property.
Let me remind you of what Abraham Lincoln's said on May 19, 1856 "The ballot is stronger than the bullet".
I am appealing to all my fellow Jamaicans, let this election be a peaceful one.
I am, etc.,
