THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM a Barbadian residing in the US and pursuing graduate studies in social work at Fordham University. My West Indian colleagues and I have taken it upon ourselves to initiate some form of social action with regards to the proposal made by the Bloomberg administration to ship NYC's garbage to the islands for disposal, as a solution to their garbage crisis.
As West Indians, we are appalled that our beautiful islands would even be approached with such a ridiculous idea, as we strongly feel that alternative measures can be found here in the US.
One wonders if the racial configuration of the islands were majority white instead of black, if the US would have even considered using us as their dumping ground. "Are we nothing more than a sewer to them?" We have enough problems of our own in the islands dealing with our own refuse to take on the responsibility of dealing with theirs.
We are urgently seeking the help of our fellow West Indians to deal with this issue, please join us in saying a resounding 'NO' to the US. We are not garbage disposal sites, and we are definitely not for sale, let them take their garbage elsewhere.
It would be greatly appreciated if persons can contact me at my address given below, whether it is individual letters, or signed petitions indicating your opinions. My colleagues and I intend to take this issue all the way to City Hall where it initially started.
I am etc.,
