The employees were from various departments: Editorial, Circulation, Transport, Prepress, Information Systems, Advertising, Accounts, Print and Plant, Sanitation and Associated Enterprise.
Cherice Brown, a sub-editor in the Editorial Department, and Joyce Rowe-Tucker of the Sanitation Department, have served the company for 35 years each. Both women received standing ovations as well as commendations from Chairman and Managing Director of the Gleaner Company, Oliver Clarke.
The Transport Department had the highest number of awardees, with eight drivers and dispatchers - the highest number of years being from dispatcher George Mosley who has given 30 years to that department.
"For every job well done, reward is deserved," Mr. Clarke said. "The workers have demonstrated high standards in the quality and length of service."
The awardees received gifts and cash grants courtesy of the company. Guests included board members, Gleaner executives, union delegates and Miss Jamaica World 2002 Danielle O'Hayon. Entertainment was provided by Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) awardees Sheldon Shepherd and Jody-Ann Bowen.
Guest speaker and Gleaner board member Senator Douglas Orane said the awardees were the faithful who provided the much needed glue to keep the organisation together. He also complimented the obvious presence of youth in the organisation, as he said the paper was constantly reinventing itself, despite its age.
