Stone throwing causes premature end to match

By Paul A. Reid, Senior Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE PEPSI/Sports Plus daCosta Cup Zone C game between Knockalva Technical and Mannings School came to an early end at Jarrett Park yesterday after referee Orville Sancroft was hit by a stone.

Mannings were leading 2-0 when the game was called off in the 64th minute.

The referee had gone over to the Knockalva bench to enquire who was responsible for providing security for the game when a stone thrown from the stands hit him on the foot.

Sancroft had gone to the bench after a bottle thrown from another section of the stands had landed on the field during a hold up for a player to get treatment.

The player, Knockalva's Garth Mitchell appeared to have been fouled in the Mannings penalty area but shouts for a spot kick were turned down by the referee.

Toric Robinson from the penalty spot in the 28th minute and Randy Campbell in the 47th minute gave Mannings the lead.

Godfrey Stewart meanwhile took over the lead in Zone C after handing Little London their first loss of the season. The margin was 1-0.

The win was Godfrey Stewart's second from four games and took them to eight points, a two-point buffer over Little London.

Twenty-three more games are scheduled to be played today as the first round of matches wind down with just the rescheduled games left to be played.
